Plenary Session Sponsored by Business Traveller Asia-Pacific

Sponsored by Business Traveller Asia-Pacific, the plenary session features the topic Developing Trends in Global Travel and Tourism Industry: Challenge and Issues. Professor Brian King of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Professor Chris Ryan of the University of Waikato, and Mr. Duane Vinson of STR will be speaking at this session, sharing their views on current trends in the tourism and hospitality industry. Mr. Jeremy Tredinnick, Editor of Business Traveller Asia-Pacific, will be the session’s moderator.

When talking about trends, technology advancement is most likely the first thing on people’s minds. How do new business models, especially those adopted by sharing economy companies such as Uber, Airbnb and online travel agencies such as Agoda, affect the tourism and hospitality industry? Have these models created opportunities or challenges for the industry? How does the industry react to adapt to these models?

Demographic changes in the tourist market are another issue that concerns the industry. Growing numbers of mainland Chinese tourists, as well as the young generation of millennials, are dominating the market: Are there any strategies that the tourism and hospitality industry has adopted to cope with this “domination”?

Safety has always been the most important consideration when travelling. Global terrorism has become a constant threat across the globe. What new measures are industry leaders taking to ensure travellers’ safety? And finally, in the mergers between huge hotel groups such as Marriott and Starwood, as well as Accor and Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel, what are the positive and negative effects on the industry and its customers?

This will be an intellectual and exciting plenary session to be conducted/led by experienced speakers from both academic and non-academic fields in the tourism and hospitality sector. Do not miss this valuable chance to be part of this interactive session.
